Famed creator of the hit game franchise Five Nights at Freddy's, Scott Cawthon, has announced on Twitter that he will be retiring after 10+ years. The announcement comes amid receiving backlash over the reported allegations that Cawthon had made donations to former president Donald Trump as well as other top Republicans. The Five Nights at Freddy's or more commonly known as "FNAF" franchise has grown and maintained an immense following, especially from members of the LGBTQ+ community. Which is why it came as a shock to many when it was alleged that he was making donations to politicians who famously have been anti-LGBTQ.
Cawthon then took to his website and wrote: "I've had a blessed, fulfilling and rich career, [...] I've tried to make some good games (let the debate ensue), and I've witnessed the creation of possibly the most creative and talented fanbase on the planet." In his statement, Cawthon adds that his sudden departure won't be the end of the franchise; he will choose someone to take over the FNAF franchise and will announce his successor at a later date.
Cawthon also addressed the allegations in the same statement on his website. He states: "I exercised my right, and my duty, as an American citizen, to vote for and support the candidates who I felt could best run the country, for everyone, and that's something that I won't apologize for,". He goes on to defend his decision and states that "Even if there were candidates who had better things to say to the LGBT community directly, and bigger promises to make, I believed their stances on other issues would have ended up doing much greater harm to those communities than good."
As of writing, we still do not know who will be taking over the franchise, but I will update this story once we do.
